At the end of September 2020, Russia has announced plans for new roundwood export restriction measures that would be valid from January 2022 onwards. Current information indicates that exports of all roundwood would be prohibited and only exports of low value hardwoods would be permitted.
Russian Federation joined the WTO in 2012 and agreed on roundwood export tariff quotas, leaving little scope for alternative trade measures. Any currently foreseen impact in the EU by the announced export restriction would be related to increased demand for domestic wood. However, no major impact is currently expected in general terms.
