Ireland recently has announced EUR 1.3 billion investment in the next national Forestry Programme.
The new Programme is built around the principle of right trees in the right places for the right reasons with the right management. In addition, Irish Minister Pippa Hackett has recently made call for an increase in the use of timber for construction.
Ireland can grow conifers at an exceptional rate, and it is this type of forest that will produce the timber required for construction. The planting of native broadleaves has a role to play in terms of biodiversity and habitat creation.
