The UK Government has introduced a statutory tree planting target to increase woodland cover in England from current 10.2% to to 16.5% by 2050. Current woodland cover in England is 1.3 million ha, and the target set for 2050 is hence 2.1 million ha.
This 800,000 ha afforestation will require some 12 billion euro investment to facilitate tree planting. As current planting rate in England is 3,000 ha/year, the new target will be tenfold (30,000 ha/year).
