Dasos has designed a new investment vehicle targeting environmentally valuable properties. The concept is based on internalising ecosystem services – such as biodiversity management and carbon farming – to compensate for the generated environmental benefit. Whilst focusing to maximise the value of the environment, the instrument minimises the trade-offs for wood production in order to enhance economics. The approach targets to increase the average size of an individual private sector conservation area, as well as to increase overall areas designated for such ecosystem services as biodiversity and carbon sink/storage. The concept is first applied for forestland properties in Nordics but it can be extended into most European countries – and even globally in suitable environments.
