In their National Energy and Climate Plan (NECP), Latvia has set the targets of increasing their national wind capacity to at least 800 MW by 2030. Current wind capacity in Latvia is only 100 MW.

Latvia has introduced several changes to the energy legislation in recent months to boost the renewable energy production including lighter Environmental Impact Assessment (EIA) processes. Historically EIA processes have been one of the most significant bottlenecks for Latvian wind power developers. Latvia is also behind the rest of Baltics in installed solar capacity, but sector is growing rapidly.

There has been a strong political will to improve the national energy supply security after the Russian war in Ukraine.
