A recent study published by Nature shows that if 90% of the new urban population would be housed in newly built wooden buildings based on Engineered Wood Products (EWP), 106 Gt of additional carbon could be saved by 2100, corresponding all global emissions over three years.
Forest plantations would need to expand by up to 149 million ha. Strong governance and careful planning are required to ensure timber cities safeguarding biodiversity.
