In Europe, biodiversity is generally produced by millions of small landowners. For more biodiversity, a functioning market for biodiversity is a prerequisite. Forest certification forms essentially a voluntary market for biodiversity, where a “plus-sustainability” scheme has standards more ambitious than those required by law.
In the following, we illustrate a market-based solution for biodiversity based on an existing plus-sustainability scheme. Our DHF-Model is currently being applied for biodiversity conservation on 5 million hectares as a first target.
